I was really surprised to discover how many of my friends had sought out counseling at some point, and how common it is across campus. It’s also nice that the mandatory health service fee that students pay covers the cost of services offered at the Counseling Center and McKinleyâ€"so get help while it’s free! There are also more informal ways to talk about mental health, or seek creative outlets with peers through registered student organizations like Open Ears, and the Illini Art Therapy Association, for example.  Whether you’re interested in seeking help for yourself, or offering your support to others, there are a number of different ways in which you can take initiative. Field Notes As I entered Club Proteo on Thursday, May 27th I noticed that there were about 20 children there today. Today is the "all you can eat pizza day" for all the children who completed task cards. As I walked through the door the first kid I saw was Jesus. I told him that I liked his new hair cut and with a big smile he responded with where's your friend? I told him that Ashley was in Mexico and then asked if his two sisters were here today. He replied with a half grin that they were in Mexico. He then began to laugh and gave me a big hug while trying to crawl around my body onto my back. When I asked him to mellow out he laid his head on my shoulder and in the next instant he jumped into the seat next to me and began repeating over and over again, "help me with Club Proteo" I asked him to hold on a second after the tenth time and he said "why do you have to be so mean," then laughed loudly and climbed onto my lap. I then helped him read a problem in the game Outnumbered and before I had the time to begin explaining what the question was asking he had already typed in the correct answer. I continued reading questions as he tried to figure them out on his fingers. Chris then made an announcement that everyone who had completed a task card should go get it and then line up single file in the hallway for the pizza. All the children, about 16 went to the art room. There were two tables set up and everyone sat around them. The experience was being videotaped by a girl in the U.C San Diego Graduate Program. The children were then asked questions about their task card experience. The question "What is a task card?" was asked and a young boy named CJ answered. He said that a task card was a piece of paper folded in half that was later opened by someone else and it contained a secret message on the inside. I sat next to two young girls named Melissa and Sarah who were both six and a half. Melissa sat sucking her thumb in between trying to answer every other question. When the questioning was over the task card were collected by Sarah. Everyone was given a plastic cup and a paper plate. Everyone got pizza and soda. Melissa ate her pizza by first dipping it in her soda. When the cups went around Melissa was left with the extras and began putting the extra cups in a circle in front of her. She then proceeded to say who they were for. One for her mom, her dad, her sister, her brother, and herself. She had two left over and asked Sarah who the other two were for. Sarah said what about your grandma? Melissa replied yah, my grandma and my grandpa even though they live in Missouri. She smiled and then look around the table still grinning. After the pizza party I went back to Club Proteo. There were not many children left, almost all of the children who ate pizza and drank soda were running around outside and in the game room playing. PERSONAL FIELDNOTES: I thought today was a pretty good day. I found it interesting that CJ described a task card like a card with a secret message. In 1939 his mental health became of concern to his parents after he deliberately severed one of his fingers in order to impress a male love interest. One of his earliest works of fiction, The Finger, was based on this incident. In 1942 Burroughs enlisted in the Army, but after receiving a rank of infantryman as opposed to the position of officer that he desired, he became dejected. By doing this, we can spread leadership development skills and behaviours among different part of banks and provide a friendly bank environment to cope with crisis and later changes. Running Head: Time Cost, Task-Switching, Repeating Tasks Task Switching Cost’s Time Brooklyn College City University of New York Abstract A replication of Task Switching Monsell 2003 experiment was done, which predicts a time cost when switching tasks. 18 participants had to complete 100 randomized trials, switching between task-repeat and task-switching trials. Reaction Times (RT) were recorded and reflected by experimenters, to determine that there is a time cost involved when switching tasks as opposed to repeating the same task. Task-Switching Costs TimeMany people take pride in the fact that they can multitask. A study â€Å"Task Switching† conducted by Monsell concluded that multitasking, or switching between tasks actually costs us time. Our brain is complicated machinery, which requires a specific program for a specific task to be loaded in to our computer, the brain, to complete a task. Switching between tasks takes more time than repeating the same task. Monse ll demonstrated that when presented with one task, our brain responds faster in completing the task, rather than switching between tasks.In a task-switching experiment subjects are first pretrained on two or more simple tasks afforded by a set of stimuli. Each task requires attention to, and classification of, a different element or attribute of the stimulus or retrieval from memory or computation of a different property of the stimulus. (eg. , Monsell 2003) In the study the subjects were presented with a series of trials (eg. , Monsell 2003) and completed the task at hand on a random trial basis. The participants had to repeat the same task or switch between tasks to complete each trial.By conducting these trials the researchers tried to examine performance or brain activation on and following trials when the task changes for evidence of extra processing demands that are associated with the need to reconfigure task-set (eg. , Monsell 2003) The study concluded our brain requires a à ¢â‚¬Å"task-set reconfiguration† a sort of mental â€Å"gear changing† (eg. , Monsell 2003) In prospective this means that our brain loads a different program every time we need to complete a separate task.When switching between tasks our brain goes between two different programs one for example for counting and one for reading, therefore costing us time to switch between these two tasks. In this experiment we tried to replicate the Monsell 2003 Task Switching experiment. 18 Participants took a brief task-switching test via program Revolution Maker ©. Each trial was randomly assigned. The participants were presented with numbers one through nine and on each trial had to react to the number, to identify either its odd or even or if the magnitude was either less than 5 or more than 5.We hypothesis that when individuals are engaged in a cognitive task there is a time cost that occurs when asked to switch between tasks as opposed to repeating tasks. In literature, a character or location that is irregular, extravagant or fantastic in form. When used as a device, the purpose is often in the style of expressionism, making the grotesque a parody of human qualities or a distorted reflection of a familiar place. In many ways grotesque characters have some kind of problem in society, and example would be a veteran who lost a limb in war and trying to fit back into society, or anything that we see as not normal in our society.Characters in this particular subject can be deformed, obsessed, or in our terms just not normal or right. Another definition of a grotesque character is characterized by ludicrous or incongruous distortion, as of appearance or manner. Flannery O’ Connor, Angela Carter, and Carson McCullers all experienced uses with grotesque characters whose works can be seen with characters who are deformed, disfigured, or social outcasts. What elements make up grotesque characters? One element of the narrative that is a character can be irregular, extravagant or fantastic in form.A grotesque character may possess a exaggerated personality trait or characteristic for the purpose of eliciting both empathy and disgust in the reader. In Flannery O’ Connor’s stories she uses two different types of grotesque characters. They normally have problems such as obsession, missing limbs, mental illnesses, or just not right in physical appearance. They stand out from other characters in a story, because of how they look or h ow they act. They are also known as outliers. Grotesque characters face many problems in society or wherever they live, because people judge them for how they look or how they act.How does this story characterization add or subtract from the story? These types of characters give the story a mix of fear, abnormality, and it causes the reader to want to keep reading, and not put the book down. They can subtract from a story by having a book full of grotesque characters and the book becomes less interesting to a reader, because there is nothing happening except a group full of deformed and disfigured people. They give a book something to talk about and allow a reader to understand why they have been outcast, or why they have certain obsessions.They bring out some qualities a lot of authors don’t write about, and that makes the book just that much more entertaining. An example from Malcom Griffith about grotesque character s â€Å"For example, he uses vague guidelines such as â€Å"the open-ended nature of grotesque† without prior explanation of which way the grotesque is open-ended (Griffith 49).
